Protein distribution through canopies influences net photosynthesis due to its effect on gross photosynthesis and respiration. By optimizing daily canopy net photosynthesis in a model, Johnson et al. derive realistic protein distributions. The model gives a clear view of the role and possible importance of photosynthetic acclimation to light, temperature and CO2 in contributing to net canopy photosynthesis, the primary driver of the plant ecosystem.
