Nectary spur anatomy of selected Aeridinae

The nectary spur is a characteristic feature of Aeridinae; a large, orchid subtribe displaying diverse pollination strategies.  Stpiczyńska et al. describe and compare its anatomy for a range of entomophilous and ornithophilous species. Structural nectary features shared by Asiatic Ascocentrum and certain bird-pollinated, Neotropical orchids assigned to Maxillariinae, Laeliinae and Oncidiinae are indicative of convergence.
