Anatolia is a biologically diverse, but phylogeographically under-explored region. Ansell et al. examine alternative phylogeographic scenarios for this mountainous region, using chloroplast DNA analysis of the herb Arabis alpina. They show that Anatolia is the cradle of global diversification, that local Pleistocene population histories can imprint on the global genetic structure and dense sampling is crucial in floristically complex regions.
